Can Human Convenience and Nature Coexist?
[…] The Nakdong River, which supplies 67% of Daegu’s drinking water, has suffered multiple pollution incidents since the phenol spill of 1991.
In 2021, the project “The Nakdong River Knows” introduced us to individuals persistently tracking wastewater, industrial sludge, and animal carcasses flowing into the river. These people continue their long fight by raising awareness about the widespread consequences of pollution—mass deaths of living organisms, soil contamination, and the collapse of local agriculture.
In contrast, companies accused of contributing to this pollution deny any direct connection to these ecological impacts and advocate for the coexistence of environmental protection and development. The survival of cities and residents often hinges on the presence or absence of these companies.
By presenting these conflicting interests and realities surrounding a single river in this exhibition, Nanjang, we hope to offer a moment for reflection and dialogue.

I have long collected and documented the lives of others—their memories, experiences, losses, and the bodies that have lived through them—as a gesture of remembrance, consolation, and empathy.
In The Revenge of Gaia, James Lovelock describes the Earth as a living superorganism in which the atmosphere, oceans, rocks, and biosphere are interconnected. This perspective led me to focus on Gaia’s skin: a surface upon which humanity now places its hopes, yet one that is once again being excavated.
As the transition to renewable energy accelerates, the extraction of lithium, nickel, manganese, and cobalt has brought new forms of environmental damage. Through Gaia’s skin, I explore the tension between the conveniences we cannot easily relinquish and the future we must nevertheless protect.

[…] I have coffee at Deulmeori, a café at the entrance to Masari, and listen to stories about the village. After a short walk through the smell of grass and earth, I arrive at the village hall. I have asked the grandmothers several times to sit for me, but they always shy away, each insisting that someone else should do it. Instead, I capture their shoes gathered together by the door and their backs as they make their way home.
A man working in the fields smiles bashfully and thanks me for coming back. Following the road farther into the village, I come across a little white dog. Even when its owner calls, the dog keeps following me. Together, we wander through the village, taking in the scenes that catch my eye and hold me there.
Less than an hour away lies a world where everything changes at a relentless pace. Perhaps because I feel the loss of disappearing places and people so keenly, these quiet scenes strike me as both beautiful and bittersweet.

“Life, Peace, and Art Action is an artistic initiative that raises awareness of environmental pollution caused by the Youngpoong Seokpo Smelter, located in the uppermost reaches of the Nakdong River.
Artists from the Daegu and Gyeongbuk regions address the history of the Nakdong River and the realities we face today through artistic actions and artworks. To confront environmental issues—among the most urgent challenges affecting our lives—and bring them into their artistic practice, the participating artists engage in discussions, workshops, and field research. Beginning at Bongsan Cultural Center, the resulting exhibition travels to Yeongju, Andong, Busan, and Seoul.”

The Lamentation series explores losses that have been denied the possibility of mourning.
This work mourns those without a voice, focusing on animals sacrificed in rituals and subjected to violence in the name of human customs. It examines five cases that continue into the present: the slaughter of livestock, whale hunting, butterfly festivals, ice-fishing festivals, and bullfighting festivals.
Prehistoric cave paintings, often interpreted as images made for hunting practice or ritual, may reflect violence driven by the human need for survival. In contrast, many forms of animal sacrifice and violence that persist today are driven by human entertainment or profit.
Just as we have long sought to live with human dignity, it is time to ask whether we enjoy our human privilege at the expense of animals’ ability to live according to their own nature.

The Bodo League was established following the enactment of the National Security Act in 1948, ostensibly to re-educate former leftists. In reality, many civilians with no ideological affiliation were pressured into joining. After the Korean War broke out in 1950, mass killings targeted Bodo League members and prisoners, including those detained in connection with the October Uprising and the Jeju April 3 Uprising. For decades, their bereaved families lived under the stigma of anti-communism, unable to speak openly about their losses.
We traced the history and remaining marks of these sites: the landscape the victims may have seen for the last time, the places where they were killed, where their bodies were concealed, and where their remains later emerged. As members of a generation that did not directly experience these massacres, we ask how we might engage with and give form to the memories of those who did.
Reckoning with the past requires recognizing the victims who lie beneath the foundations of this nation. Remembering suppressed histories is an attempt to restore denied rights and to break the recurring cycle of violence and massacre.

In its conventional Buddhist meaning, Musaekgye refers to the Formless Realm, a realm of pure consciousness that transcends desire and attachment to the material world. In this project, however, the meaning is reconfigured through a different use of the character gye, meaning “boundary” or “restraint.” Here, Musaekgye suggests a state free from both emotional desire and rational judgment.
By suspending these two forces that permeate human life, the project seeks a pure aesthetic contemplation of the human body and human existence.
The photobook Musaekgye is a collaboration between media artist Lim Hyunggyu and painter MISO. It brings together Lim’s photographs of models staged within the space of Musaekgye and collaborative works in which MISO’s painting is layered over his photographic images.
